When I was in high school, all of us violin players were known as the “orchestra geeks.” No one ever thought our skills would be welcome in a rock band, but Joan Wasser’s violin is what makes the Dambuilders a bit more innovative than other indie ensembles. The 10 tracks on the band’s fifth album (and major-label debut) Encendador prove that a good riff doesn’t necessarily need to be played on a six-stringed instrument. With Antietam and Melting Hopefuls at 8:30 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 930 F St. NW. $9. (202) 393-0930. (Tina Plottel)
