The Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), a libertarian think tank in D.C., has published the 1995 Federal Disaster Calendar, detailing 12 of big government’s biggest foibles. For example, May reminds us of the gas lines of 1979 with a few stanzas bashing Jimmy Carter: “So if laws make you wait/At the gas station gate,/Just remember, while faking a smile:/Price controls never work/And only a jerk/Likes rationing, Soviet style.” The calendar is available at Borders Books & Music and the George Washington University bookstore for $10 (two for $18). Isn’t a picture of the destruction of St. Louis’ Pruitt-Igoe housing project more compelling than Cindy Crawford?
