DECEMBER 17
What if, on your birthday, all your friends came over to watch you do aerobics, step on a scale, and take a bath? It sounds a little embarrassing, but if you were a 1-year-old elephant, you probably wouldn’t mind. Today, the National Zoo celebrates Kumari’s birth, which took place Dec. 14, 1993, to proud mom Shanti. Planned activities include an elephant exercise demonstration, the presentation of a “cake,” an afternoon bath, and a “Guess Kumari’s Weight Contest,” whose winner will receive a bona fide African safari. From 11:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at the National Zoo’s Elephant House, 3001 Connecticut Ave. NW. FREE. (202) 673- 4717. (Nathalie op de Beeck)
