Klezmer is the lively dance music brought to North America by Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe. Since the late 1970s, it has experienced a resurgence at the hands of a new generation of musicians. The most exciting of these revivalists is New York’s Klezmatics, whose brilliant fusion of traditional and progressive elements takes klezmer into the 21st century. This fearless bunch adds electric bass, drums, and keyboards to the standard core of violin, clarinet, and accordion, giving the music much more rhythmic punch. It also features a considerable amount of wild, jazzy improvisation, particularly from violinist Alicia Svigals and clarinetist David Krakauer. The band is blessed with an outstanding lead vocalist, Lorin Sklamberg, who’ll make you cry or shout for joy even if you don’t understand a word of Yiddish. At 8:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3901 Mount Vernon Ave. Alexandria. $16.50. (703) 549-5919.
