You erroneously reported (“Loose Lips,” 1/12) that the Heritage Foundation was liened on by the District Government for failure to pay realty taxes. Had you been less reliant on D.C. Government and spoken not to the taxer, but the taxee, you would have found that no lien exists, that all taxes are paid, that the D.C. Superior Court tossed out the government’s tax case in 1993 and ordered the government to restore the foundation to the tax-exempt rolls.
Documents are available to show the Heritage Foundation does pay its taxes on the extent of space used by its tenants. The next story might be why the D.C. Government can’t get its records up to date; is it inertia, inexperience, ineptness, or ire?
