While The For Carnation has terrible grammar, the band has impeccable taste. Featuring members of the hugely influential Slint and the soon-to-be venerated Tortoise, the five Carnations concoct a brooding brew on their debut EP, Fight Songs. Not as ferocious as Mike Tyson, Songs pulls a Muhammad Ali-style rope-a-dope, lulling the listener into passivity before clocking him cold. With Storm and Stress at 9 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $7. (202) 667-7960. CP
