MONDAY

On its Smell Like Records longplayer, La Mia Vita Violenta, Blonde Redhead exhibits a sense of economy and a knack for the hook that suggests a jazzier Slanted and Enchanted-era Pavement (“Down Under”) and an appreciation of drone and discomfort that owes something to Sonic Youth (“Bean”). Live, these settings for vocalists Amedeo and Kazu’s musings on fucked-up relationships are almost always hypnotic and occasionally transcendent. Make*Up, rumored to have a Dischord LP in the can, has an increasingly confident live show—imagine a condensed R&B/soul revue pumped up with amphetamines and distortion pedals. The up-and-coming locals and Les Savy Fav open at 8:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $5. (202) 667-7960. CP
