You remember Marlin Fitzwater. Fat. Bald. Funny eyes. Fitzwater was White House press secretary from 1982 to ’92, and now he’s written a 400-page kiss-and-tell on his “decade with presidents and the press.” Its awestruck title is Call the Briefing!, exclamation point included. The book combines stultifying autobiography, self-serving remembrances of power, and banal observations on democracy. But it’s not just boring. It’s also infuriating, since Fitzwater blithely recalls from his press conferences obfuscation after obfuscation, omission after omission.
