As exemplars of indie-rock escapism—getting away from it all through noise, through melody, through a pathological obsession with their scene—Archers of Loaf garner more than their share of Pavement comparisons. It’s unfair if only because the Archers never consciously court irony: They’re so fervent that when they sing about killing a rock ’n’ roll singer for sucking, it’s easy to believe that the guy deserved it. At their core, what counts is that the apathy they suppress has made them downright mean. If you think the Archers sound full of rage now, just wait until they figure out why.
