YOUR “BABY IS D.C. SICK”
(2/23) was an excellent piece and drew attention to one of D.C.’s dirtiest little secrets. However, your readers should know that D.C.’s water problems are, in part, a reflection of a national crisis. The EPA’s funding has been slashed by the Republican Congress (under the current Continuing Resolution, the EPA is being funded more than 20 percent below FY ’95 levels), and these cuts are falling disproportionately on inspection programs. The EPA is being prevented from inspecting and helping clean up our water by Congress. The blind Republican rush to reduce the deficit, while chanting the mantra of “smaller government,” is decreasing the chances that D.C. can get its water quality problems under control!
