There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
YOU CAN’T JUDGE A book by its cover. While this may be true of most books, Holly Bass’ hatchet job, “Why BET Sucks” (3/8), didn’t disappoint my preconception. While Bass made some good points about the scarcity of decent programming on BET, she spent most of the article attacking individual personalities and perpetuating black stereotypes. Personally, I found the article hilarious for two reasons. Washington City Paper thinks that it can mask its unrelenting attacks on black institutions in a black face, and that somehow this will lend credence to the story. Why else does Bass make such a concerted effort to let the readers know her race and economic status. It seems Bass has a secure future at City Paper as the next Jonetta Rose Barras. Bass made reference to religious programming (“souls are bought and sold on BET”) and infomercials “pimping the black community”: I suggest Bass check the name on her paycheck to see who her pimp is; his initials are CP.
