It’s the buttocks. A gay male friend recently admitted what I had long suspected about his interest in figure skating, and while I was reluctant to generalize, he was not, stating that he figured that was why most gay men were into the sport: It’s the buttocks. Needless to say, this allure is not lost on the other genders and orientations. People who don’t want to admit that this is the heart of figure skating’s popularity talk about things like skill and grace, or point out that other sports also feature athletes with nice butts stuffed into skin-tight costumes, but nonetheless there is something about a figure skater, bent at the waist, circling the ice backward, leading with those hypertrophied glutes….See them up close at the Campbell’s Soups 1996 Tour of World Figure Skating Champions, at 1 p.m. at USAir Arena, Landover. $30 & $45.
