Back when it was proper to compare any noise-guitar outfit to My Bloody Valentine, Lush was one of the only bands for which the match made any sense. Four years and two albums later, though, they’ve forgone the wall-of-noise strumming and mumbled vocals in favor of more traditional pop treatments—now, you can actually understand Emma Anderson and Miki Berenyi’s lyrics. While some die-hard fans may miss the distortion, the simpler sound has served its purpose: Lovelife is Lush’s most commercially successful effort yet. They’ll be headlining a 4AD-sponsored evening, with ex-Slowdive cohorts Mojave 3, whose gorgeous debut, Ask Me Tomorrow, is more Mazzy Star than Velvet Underground. Scheer opens at 9:30 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $10. (202) 393-0930. (Tina Plottel)
