M O N D A Y

Last October, Palace and Smog played a sparsely attended and impressively divisive date at the Black Cat. Smog’s Bill Callahan discursively, slowly strummed his guitar and sang as if not even the four-track were listening; half the stage away, Cindy Dall, similarly absorbed in the sound of her own voice, harmonized as if hearing only a faint pluck through her living-room wall. Palace’s Will Oldham led a willfully clumsy band scarcely familiar with his sprung folk songs, conjuring a town drunk stringing along any barfly who’ll listen. I thought it was one of the best nights of the year; no one I knew thought much of it at all. See for yourself when these denizens of Drag City pull into Shaw at 8:45 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $8. (202) 393-0930. (Glenn Dixon)
