On Mem Shannon’s debut, A Cab Driver’s Blues, the Crescent City cabbie intersperses his gritty blues laments with their real-life inspirations—secretly taped conversations with his passengers, who include an angry prostitute, an obnoxious lawyer, and horny businessmen in search of strip bars. As fascinating as these dialogues are, they don’t upstage Shannon’s funky storytelling, which he delivers in a droll baritone and supports with his own understated chordwork amid his band’s skeletal yet robust rhythmic flow. One Thin Dime opens at 9 p.m. at Twist & Shout, 4800 Auburn Ave., Bethesda. $7. (301) 652-3383. (Steve Kiviat)
