There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.

The John Tesh mentality behind naming a group Saxemble thankfully doesn’t carry over into the music on the band’s wondrous domestic debut. Assembled by tenor saxophonist Frank Lowe, Saxemble features six reedmen (including the great James Carter) and a drummer, and plays everything from the aptly named “Lowe Down & Blue” to Albert Ayler’s avant-garde tour de force, “Ghosts.” Like the World Saxophone Quartet with a gutbucket rhythm-and-blues edge, the Saxemble plays soul music for the head. At 8 & 10 p.m. at Blues Alley, 1073 Rear Wisconsin Ave. NW. $18. (202) 337-4141. (Christopher Porter)
