In this crazy, mixed-up, postpunk world in which we live, it’s easy for bands to hop on board that atonal, wall-of-noise train. But the Kill Rock Stars darlings in Unwound are talented enough writers and musicians to transcend the cookie-cutter sound. On the band’s latest release, Repetition (which I hate to admit does earn its title at times), Unwound experiments with synthesizers and even does a wacky dub number. In order to fully experience the sweet, pained energy of this trio, however, you’ve got to see it live. Opening is Blonde Redhead, whose female squeals sometimes make me wish someone would just let the young Kim Gordon rest in peace; Moket and the Great Unraveling are also on the bill at 9 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $6.
