In one of the more audacious offers of 20th-century history, Germany in 1917 offered to swap Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona to Mexico in exchange for Mexico’s declaration of war on its northern neighbor. This coded communiqué, which went down in history as “The Zimmerman Telegram,” was intercepted by British intelligence, which deciphered it and provided it to the United States. Lt. Col. Markus Ring (Ret.) will discuss the fateful telegram, which is on display in the National Archives’ “American Originals” exhibit. At noon at the National Archives, Room 105, 7th & Pennsylvania Ave. NW. FREE. (202) 501-5000. (MJ)
