There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
Though reportedly named for Steve Cropper’s brand of cigarettes, Big Ass Truck’s Kent owes more to late P-Funk axman Eddie Hazel than to the MGs’ guitar hero for its funk-metal fireworks. Still, the six-piece band—boasting two guitars and a DJ—honors the soul roots of hometown Memphis: What else would you expect from the hiphop spawn of Mud Boy and the Neutrons? Recorded damn near live at Ardent Studios, Kent captures the groove-heavy, good-humored dynamics of a band whose shows are the stuff of legend in Memphis. At 9 p.m. at the Bayou, 3135 K St. NW. $6. (202) 333-2897. (ED)
