For the past 30 years, the reigning monarchs of mbaqanga, the musical amalgamation named after the catchall stew served in the South African townships, have been Malathini and the Mahotella Queens. Mbaqanga has had a resurgence in recent years, partly thanks to its appearance on Paul Simon’s Graceland, but more because of the excitement and freshness that this group continues to bring to its performances. Malathini’s impossibly low, gravelly voice and the soaring harmonies of the Queens combine with driving tempos to produce a most distinctive and danceable groove. At 7:30 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St., NW. $20. (202) 393-0930. (Eric Payne)
