A return to Belgian director Chantal Ackerman’s monomaniacal early style, D’Est (From the East) is a series of tracking shots that affectlessly surveys Russia, Poland, and East Germany soon after the disintegration of Soviet Communism. Both fascinating and difficult to watch, this diffident documentary makes the director’s notorious Jeanne Dielman, 23 Quai du Commerce, 1080 Bruxelles seem friendly by comparison: It fastidiously avoids any sort of payoff. At 8 p.m. at Ring Auditorium, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, 7th St & Independence Ave SW. FREE. (202) 357-2700. (MJ)
