It might seem like a hard sell, flogging The Yankee Encyclopedia outside New York, but author/Yankee-fetishist Mark Gallagher knows that the pinstripers, like the Dallas Cowboys, demonstrate the depressing fact that (national mythology notwithstanding) a lot of Americans like rooting for the overdog, and that Yankee fans can be found all across the land (although I would stay out of Boston if I were Gallagher). The book itself is huge without being comprehensive, and both print and reproductions are strangely shoddy, but Gallagher is in complete command of facts on the level of Ernie Bonham’s holding the fourth-lowest career ERA among Yankee pitchers with at least 800 innings (2.74). Gallagher appears at 2 p.m. at Borders, 11301 Rockville Pike, Rockville. FREE. (301) 816-1067. (James Lochart)
