I guess drummers still can’t get no respect in spite of Washington City Paper’s attempts. Dave Nuttycombe’s article “Drummer Spotted” (7/26) totally mixes up the Animals. You identified their guitarist, Hilton Valentine, as the drummer. Whereas John Steel, on the far left of the photograph, was indeed the drummer, a great one at that. By the way, may their bass player, Chas Chandler, who just recently died, rest in peace. His bass lines will live forever, not to mention “discovering” Jimi Hendrix. Do I get a City Paper T-shirt for pointing out this shameful mistake?

Dave Nuttycombe replies: My shame is so consuming that I shall indeed buy Mssrs. Cox and Wilkinson T-shirts for being so quick to point out my inadequacies. Similar gratitude is extended to CP contributor Michael Reidy for filling my voice-mail with more details about the Animals than anyone needs to know. For the (let’s hope) final contest results and another look at the real John Steele, turn to Page 37.
