I was dismayed at the 7/19 News of the Weird, which perpetuated stereotypes of the Arab male as a chaser of Western women. Indeed, you write of Muammar Qaddafi’s obsession with Margaret Tutweiler and Lt. Gen. Mustafa Tiass’ infatuation with Princess Diana.
The accompanying cartoon shows an Arab being kissed by his camel. Such images serve to reinforce negative and stereotypical images of Arabs in the minds of your readers. Arab men are no more obsessed with foreign women than any other males.
It is disappointing that your paper failed to exhibit a basic level of sensitivity toward the Arab culture. Your portrayal is offensive to thousands of Americans of Arab origin as it defames their rich cultural heritage.
