My curling iron still has the scorch marks to prove it: In eighth grade I was obsessed with constructing the perfect Pat Benatar ’do. The short, spiky top and longer back, with just a hint of curl at the ends, was worshiped by many rebel-girl wannabes (and in later years was morphed into the “ape drape” for guys). Early-morning gelling, moussing, and spraying—I also applied the occasional dollop of Elmer’s Glue—kept me locked away in the bathroom until every piece was in place. After roaring my rendition of “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” into a rarely used hairbrush in front of the mirror, off I went to sit in the back of the bus with the other tough-haired chicks. Even today, with her conservative bob, Pat can sing circles around such Angry Young Women as horse-faced Alanis with her untamed mane. Benatar opens for the graying Steve Miller Band at 7:30 p.m. at Nissan Pavillion, 7800 Cellar Door Dr., Bristow. $17.25-37.25. (703) 754-6400. (Elisa Nader)
