If the boys in the band didn’t purport to be Satanists, misogynists, or ravenous scum-suckers, Slayer might be headlining this summer’s Metalpalooza. When it comes to speed—the crucial ingredient in post-glam thrash metal—not even Metallica can keep pace with the pinpoint accuracy, bpms, and sonically implied blood-lust of Slayer. It’s hardly a surprise that these momentum freaks would devote an entire album, Undisputed Attitude, to covers of classic hardcore tunes—even though the long hair and apparent allegiance to Sabbath suggests otherwise, hardcore, not metal, is where Slayer’s real roots lie. (For that matter, remember Metallica’s Garage Days Re-Revisited?) You could even make a case that Slayer is capable of taste; the band covers three Minor Threat songs. With Unsane at 7:30 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $15. (202) 393-0930. (Brett Anderson)
