Jimmie Dale Gilmore is the philosophical space-case of country’s Texas-bred, neo-trad set. But regardless of what some purists might argue, Gilmore is at his best when he’s stargazing; both ’93’s Spinning Around the Sun and his latest, Braver New World, are full of stunning and simple spirituals informed by Gilmore’s intellectual background in metaphysics and filled with pure honky-tonk heart. With his voice—three parts Roy Orbison, two parts Hank Williams, one part Kermit the Frog—Gilmore conveys an ecstatic sort of optimism that could only come from someone who believes in other worlds. With Scud Mountain Boys at 8:30 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3901 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $17.50. (703) 549-5919. (Brett Anderson)
