Despite such Americana as “Diner” (“my shiny shiny love”), just the timings on Martin Sexton’s Black Sheep (most songs longer than four minutes, one pushing seven) indicate what sort of country-folkie he is—one who’s listened to plenty of Van Morrison. Sexton doesn’t fully channel the Celtic soul elder, but he gets enough of that slippery into-the-mystic phrasing to make titles like “Freedom of the Road” less hazardous than they might seem. Sexton opens for Wolfstone at 8 p.m. at the Birchmere, 3901 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria. $15. (703) 549-5919. (MJ)
