Thank you Washington City Paper—and especially Trey Graham—for refreshingly honest arts coverage. I was disappointed by DCAC’s Tower of Babel and agree completely with Graham’s review. I was all set to see Olney’s Mrs. Warren’s Profession after the Washington Post’s rave, but after reading Graham’s review, I think I’ll save the 28 bucks. After all the Post liked Tower of Babel, too.
City Paper’s Graham and Bob Mondello are unflinching when the play stinks, but not perennially nasty. The Post seems guided by some weird variation of the PC code: rave about everything at Theatre 3 and the Arlington Players—oops! I mean Signature Theatre—and pan any out-of-N.Y.C. tours like Oleanna, The Kentucky Cycle, or The Fantasticks. City Paper’s critics give the impression of callin’ each show as they see it.
