In a thrift store today I saw a woman stretching XL sweaters over a body wider than it was tall. Her foam-rubber foundation included watermelon breasts with coffee-cup-size nipples resting on a Volkswagen-pregnant belly. Since she was waggling all that in the mirror outside the dressing room, shopping etiquette permitted my asking, “What’s up with that outfit? And are those underpants on your head?” Sure enough, it wasn’t all for a date; she’s part of the theater/performance group Membrane, led by original 9:30 Club impresario Dody DiSanto. The round lady told me that all 11 troupe members (several of whom matriculated at Clown College) would be in similarly fantastic shape for their performance at the “Cabaret du Temps.” Also on the bill is new band y9, led by Michael Barron (ex–Tiny Desk Unit), and techno/house DJ Michael Meacham. The evening benefits our Oscars, the Rosebud Film and Video Competition. At 8:30 at the Bank, 915 F St. NW. $10. (202) 797-9081. (Virginia Vitzthum)
