I hear that in their native Canada the Tragically Hip sell out hockey arenas and are more or less as popular as the Stones. The surprise there is that the Hip’s stadium-size sound almost begs for an intimate setting. The guitars churn and arc instead of bludgeoning, and frontman Gordon Downie is a bit of a mystic, favoring a dream-state in which to couch his oblique references to mental collapse and coldly calculated interplay with loved ones. The drama unfolds fabulously in clubs, where these major-leaguers mix it up like aces pitching in the minors. With Van Allen Belt at 7:30 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $15. (202) 393-0930.
