After “Burn, Baby, Burn” (8/30) and Fire Chief Otis Latin Sr.’s response (The Mail, 9/27), I thought I would put in a good word for the D.C. Fire and EMS Department. From my six-year vantage point high up in an apartment building on 14th Street’s main drag, I have witnessed and reported numerous fires and car accidents. I have continually been impressed with the department’s rapid and efficient response to a variety of incidents.

My own building caught fire not too long ago. It was a scary, massive blaze, and we had to leave the building for hours. Portions of one floor were decimated. The fire folks showed up pronto, quickly took charge of the situation, herded everyone outside, and got to work. I was quite impressed with their admirable efforts, and I remember feeling that we were in very good hands. With the shortage of decent management and needed resources in the District, my eyes and ears tell me that the department is doing their best under trying circumstances. I hope they know there are people like me out there who do notice and appreciate their work on behalf of public safety.
