Once a trio with Richard and Ed Baluyut on guitar and drums and Fontaine Toups on bass, New York City’s Versus has since fleshed out its hard-pop sound with the addition of another Baluyut brother, guitarist James. Both live and on Secret Swingers, the sublime and bittersweet vocals of Richard and Toups are reinforced by a fuller guitar sound. While Versus may not yet have rebutted the criticism that it lacks charisma on stage, its current amalgamation of ringing indie-pop melodies, Mission of Burma-inspired postpunk edginess, and entrancing Daydream Nation-style atmospherics compensates with a mesmerizing sound. With The Pulsars and Leka at 8:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $6. (202) 667-7960. (Steve Kiviat)
