Folk traditions never die out, they just get reinterpreted by subsequent generations. Young fiddler Ashley MacIsaac takes on the aural folkways of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, a place where Celtic ballads and tunes have been passed from parent to child for hundreds of years. MacIsaac absorbed these influences in the true “folk” manner, but what he’s done with them is something else altogether. While MacIsaac can play in a purely traditional style, on his U.S. debut Hi How Are You Today, what we get are loud, nasty versions of ancient fiddle tunes with MacIsaac (and his backing players) rockin’ out hard. Tonight, MacIsaac and his band open for quirky Winnipeg folkish punk/pop outfit Crash Test Dummies in an all-Canadian extravaganza! At 7:30 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $20. (202) 393-0930.
