Superdrag’s John Davis faces a fairly common quandary in this post-grunge moment: With melodies up the wazoo but only a couple of good reasons to be angry, where does a Beatles freak find the power for his power-pop? In Davis’ case, the grit is partly accidental—his voice tends to give out before his ambition—and partly generational—the guitars crunch. The result is that Superdrag’s latest, Regretfully Yours, is about as natural-sounding as a record with Top 40 ambitions can be.
