With the addition of former Johnson Mountain Boy Dudley Connell, the Seldom Scene not only has a fine new singer but a master songwriter as well; Connell’s mournful “The Shape I’m In” is the highlight of Dream Scene, the band’s strongest work in years. Even so, John Duffey remains the group’s leader, and his stark rendition of “The Little Sparrow (Fair and Tender Ladies)” is high, lonesome bluegrass at its best—you know, the real thing.
