I thought “Near Death Experience” by John Cloud (12/6) was a very well-done piece. However, I did want to make a point in regard to one assertion made in the article:
A reference was made to Gov. George Allen’s administration setting an execution date on the birthday of a condemned killer’s mother’s birthday. I assume this refers to Larry Stout, who, as I write this, is to be executed tomorrow (12/10). I would note that an execution date decision is not made by Allen, nor is it made in reference to any particular birthday or milestone in someone’s life. Granted, this is a cruel twist of fate. No doubt the family of the dry-cleaning worker Stout murdered while robbing the store could tell you of the cruel twist of fate in their life, too.
