Soca’s double-time programmed beats, double-entendre-filled lyrics, and bubbly horn blasts often seem predictable, but the Troubadours International, a longtime Barbados outfit, generally keep the style fresh on Movin’. While a few compositions are marred by slick production, Michael Thompson’s lilting delivery of the group’s indelible choruses on such lascivious tracks as “Coming Soon” and “Bumper Accident” suggests why the boisterous format remains viable. Thompson also engages a pair of female backing vocalists in vivacious call-and-response chants on several cuts, re-establishing the balance between this dance music’s high-tech and human elements.
