It didn’t look good for Come when its rhythm section quit and Thalia Zedek and Chris Brokaw became Steve Wynn’s backing band for a time. That’s not quite like sitting in with Paul Shaffer, but it’s close. But being a duo has worked for Come. Its latest disc, Near Life Experience, focuses less on long jams and more on what always made the Boston band interesting: the taut interplay of Zedek and Brokaw’s guitars, her low, sensual voice, and the music’s desolate, bluesy undertones. It’s as if they melded the best moments of ’70s rock, from the grime of Exile on Main Street to Television’s twisted tunings. Don’t know how all this will work tonight. When Zedek and Brokaw lock on, they can be transcendent. When they don’t, it’s so ponderous that even those Steve Wynn solo albums seem interesting. With the Ruby Dare and the Methelene Group at 9:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $6. (202) 667-7960. (DD)
