As readers or viewers of Ragtime may remember, architect Stanford White was shot by millionaire Harry Thaws, who had discovered that White had enjoyed the company of Thaws’ wife when she was a young showgirl. Mrs. Thaws was not the only one. White seduced “perhaps a thousand” such women, some of them in the baroque apartment he kept in the tower above Madison Square Garden (not the insipid current one), which he designed. So writes Suzannah Lessard in The Architect of Desire: Beauty and Danger in the Stanford White Family. Lessard, a former New Yorker staffer, is a member of that family: As Stanford White’s great-granddaughter, she has a special relationship to the family gossip she artfully recounts. Lessard discusses her book at 7 p.m. at the Arts Club of Washington, 2017 I St. NW. FREE. For reservations call (202) 331-7282. (MJ)
