In a town where 12 hours of nonstop talking usually means a Senate filibuster, it’s nice to find a half-day of discourse promising poetry—in español, no less. Teatro de la Luna’s “Maratón de la Poesía” is the area’s only Spanish poetry jam, but it has kept its democratic roots, offering an open mike for local poets to read their obras and for fans of the greats to read their favorite poems. This fifth running of the marathon will also feature sideshows like the sale of books by local poets, a photo exhibit of Paraguay’s contemporary theater scene, and a slide presentation about legendary Nicaraguan poet Ruben Dario. There will even be snacks available, so folks in it for the long haul won’t need a siesta. From 10 a.m.-10 p.m. at Ellipse Arts Center, 4350 N. Fairfax Dr., Fairfax. $5. (703) 548-3092. (Tom Stabile)
