Despite its provocative title, Wired magazine editor Jon Katz’s Virtuous Reality: How America Surrendered Discussion of Moral Values to Opportunists, Nitwits, & Blockheads Like William Bennett is less a hard-hitting analysis of conservative hypocrites and the country’s ethical climate than a trite advertisement for the plugged-in media the author makes his living writing about. While this former CBS Morning News producer’s trusting, civil liberties-based rules of conduct seem more sensible than those dominating the current discourse, his overblown, platitudinous embrace of the reach and quality of the Web, CNN, and MTV News is nearly as fanciful as the good ol’ days invoked regularly by politicians of all stripes. Katz reads from his effort at 6 p.m. at Vertigo Books, 1337 Connecticut Ave. NW. FREE. (202) 429-9272. (SK)
