There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
The music on Brit-hoppers Sneaker Pimp’s debut, Becoming X, is a welcome blend of Krautrock riddims slowed to a tripped-out sway set against squeaky keyboards and screechy guitars. Unfortunately, the Pimps also have their own Shirley Manson in Kelli Dayton, who delivers such drivel as “She must be a Thelma or Louise/She must be a postmodern [dramatic pause] sleaze” in a coy, babydoll voice. Manson’s mystery-free brand of sexuality only adds to the notion that the garbage she spews is as vacant as the gaze escaping her heavily painted eyes. While I haven’t seen a good picture of Dayton, her Manson family values might become clear when the Pimps caddy into town. With Thrift Unit at 8:30 p.m. at the Black Cat, 1831 14th St. NW. $6.
