TUESDAY
Australia’s Dirty Three have a knack for making me cry. Maybe I’m just too sentimental, but when Warren Ellis’ sorrowful violin pushes me up against the edge of self-containment I realize why this band has no vocalist. Words would be extraneous; the music speaks an intensely riveting language all its own. The band’s third album, Horse Stories, brings those forgotten memories, loves, and old regrets back to haunt you with a wistful clarity you wouldn’t expect from a single guitar, violin, and drums. That tonight’s appearance is a sit-down show is made all the more appropriate by fellow tearjerkers Lowwho’d be able to stand? At 8:30 p.m. at the 9:30 Club, 815 V St. NW. $9. (202) 393-0930. (Amy Domingues)
