TUESDAY

I first heard “Shadowboxer” at 4 a.m. After working late, I was winding down with some soothing VH-1. I found myself beguiled by the apparition of Fiona Apple. Was she a woman, a kid, a record label’s vain attempt to cash in on the angry female.altrock trend, or perhaps (I shuddered at the thought) the real thing? Whatever she was, who was this fool who dared to play with her heart? Boy, would he be sorry when he saw her 12-foot eyes staring him down from a billboard somewhere. As I said, it was late. Opener Morcheeba might want to include spliff with its next record. The moody, transparent grooves of the group’s Massive Attack-lite nearly require it. At 8:30 p.m. at the Capitol Ballroom, 1015 Half St. SE. $15. (202) 554-1500. (John Dugan)
