Mike Volpe was a man on a mission (Cheap Seats, 4/11). Mike Volpe took a stand for baseball fans around America. Mike Volpe had many people, including myself, in his proverbial corner. Mike Volpe chose the Philadelphia Phillies. Good Lord. What in the name of Doubleday was this guy thinking?! I would like to think that as avid a fan as Volpe is, he would be more than capable of finding a good, solid major-league franchise. Has he taken a long, hard look at Veterans Stadium? Has he browsed over the Phillies roster? Wait just a second, Phillies management promised to rebuild the farm system. For Mike Volpe??? This man actually threw a pitch from the mound of Camden Yards and still opted to don the title “Phanatic”! And of course, in true Philadelphian style, the press and fans have grilled him (overlooked those loose ends, didn’t you Mike?). Give credit to Volpe for becoming Major League Baseball’s first (and, God willing, last) free-agent fan. For this, Volpe has earned the right to be a Philadelphia Phillies fan, a most dubious reward for all his efforts. Thanks for the laughs, Mike Volpe. And thank you, Dave McKenna.
