There’s still time to nominate local icons for Best of D.C.
As always, I grabbed my Washington City Paper from the California Tortilla stand as the delivery truck turned the corner. Unfortunately, in this issue, you have ventured into areas where you should never go. Please, never write about hockey in this town (Cheap Seats, 4/18). Your paper has shown it is like 95 percent of the people who claim to be Washington Capitals fans: They know nothing about hockey. Vegas must have seen Dave McKenna coming. Dave, pal o’mine, the NHL team in Colorado is the Avalanche, not the Rockies. The Rockies were the Colorado NHL team…and folded in April 1982…over 13 years ago.
True hockey fans in Washington aren’t consumed with the Capitals’ winning or lack thereof, we are just happy to be able to see the sport we love played by the best athletes in the world. If it wasn’t for Abe Pollin bringing hockey to Washington, I never would have seen Bobby Orr, Gordie Howe, the Great One, Marcel Dionne, Jim Schoenfeld, Ken Dryden, Mike Bossy, Guy LaFleur (the list is endless) in person. Thank you, Mr. Pollin and good luck in the MCI Center. Please try not to gouge real hockey fans too much. (Dave, next time I’ll give you 100-1 you don’t remember the name of the team in Cleveland.)
