His press release says, “For pianist Benny Green, there’s no such thing as cruising on automatic pilot.” Yes, there is. Green is one of the busiest high-profile players in the biz, but Kaleidoscope, his first album as leader in three years, doesn’t display the dizzying array of colors its name suggests. Although the CD’s title track is special, breaking off from its melodic beginnings into a bristling and open-ended jam, the record grows familiar with the rinky-dink soul jazzer “The Sexy Mexy” and the dull, mainstream floater “You’re My Melody.” Though the number of pianists with incredible skills and no identifiable style is too high for me to count (unless I take off my shoes), tunes like “Kaleidoscope” lead me to believe that one day Green won’t be just another number. The Benny Green Trio plays at 8 & 10 p.m. at Blues Alley, 1073 Rear Wisconsin Ave. NW. $17.75. (202) 337-4141. (CP)
