You think you know the essence of slam poetry having visited the Black Cat and the now defunct 15 Minutes Club a few times. Maybe you even heard the Nuyoricans read. But you ain’t nevah seen nothin’ like “Bring in da Slam.” This slam has the power to knock down the ivory towers of the academy and shake the faulty foundations of potholed ghetto streets. A celebrity team featuring Nikki “Still Egotrippin’” Giovanni, AU-prof-with-a-Pulitzer-in-his-pocket Henry Taylor, poet laureate Robert Hass, Reuben “I Dig Jazz” Jackson, and Chicago godfather of slam Marc Smith will compete against a team of up-and-coming D.C. young’uns who know their way around a poem.

The audience will decide who’s the baddest. Proceeds from admission costs, book sales, and an auction go to WritersCorps. At 7:30 p.m. at Borders, 18th & L Sts. NW. $5. (202) 466-4999. (Holly Bass)
