Bravo and thank you for your feature on Hank Carde by John Cloud (“The Commander,” 5/2). Rarely in one’s life does one encounter individuals who have grown to such a point of integrity as has Hank Carde. Hank, by virtue of living his beliefs with passion and mastering the District’s petty AIDS politics for the sake of others, rises above the usual games played with the lives of District residents. The shortcomings we all share aside, it can honestly be said that no one person has done more to shape effective HIV/AIDS policy and motivate the city’s paralyzed bureaucracy than Hank. More devastating for people with HIV/AIDS in the District than the loss or ineffective use of federal dollars will be the loss of Hank Carde.
